Changes Galore

Been quiet here lately, but I've been busy elsewhere on the interwebs.  I have moved the content for my two RPG settings (Marchland and Gallowgear) to separate blogger sites, allowing me to trim down this site.

I've expanded the content for Marchland quite a bit, including many new creatures in the Bestiary and more content on the city of Brighton Bay.  I've also revamped the character creation rules so they're a little more balanced.  Specifically, changing Grave Touched from a racial type to an Arcane Background that has access to the Revenant Favors as powers.  I'll be adding more powers to their list shortly.  Right now, it's pretty limited, but I want to make sure they list reflects the nature of the Grave Touched.  I don't want just another type of Magi.

Steampunk City

While meandering about the interwebs, I stumbled across this LJ post.  I can't read the language, but it appears to be a display at a Czech Republic museum.  It's made entirely from Erector sets, and is pretty impressive by any standards.

Time to invoke Rule #2: The Double Tap

During my three days at PAX Prime last weekend, I couldn't help notice the preponderance of zombie themed games.  The short list includes - Dead Island, All Zombies Must Die, Charlie Murder, Zombie Dice, and Last Night on Earth.  There were more, but I stopped paying attention at some point.

Now, I'm not saying these are bad games.  In my opinion, some of them are quite good.  So don't send me hate mail because I don't like your favorite game.

My point here, is that zombies are starting to wear thin as a horror trope.  What started with an entertaining, low-budget horror film has ballooned into countless sequels, a long running comic series, alternate universes for existing comic series, an entire shelf of novels at Barnes and Noble, and most recently, a TV series.  More movies are on the way, and new zombie themed, alternate universes keep popping up on the comic store shelves.  When will it end?  When we stop buying it I suppose.

The problem with this level of media saturation, is that zombies just aren't scary anymore.  Even replacing Romero's shambling corpses, with blood-spewing marathon runners didn't help.  The last two zombie films I found entertaining were Shawn of the Dead, and Zombieland.

And that my friends, is the kiss of death for horror.

When you make the leap from terrifying villain to comic punch line, you are done as a horror trope.  Sorry zombies, you've been retired.  Time to spend your golden days shambling across my back lawn, getting shot by cute, cartoony plants.

Take a double tap to the head, and don't rise in the morning.

Windows and Doors

When making terrain, I find creating the windows and doors to be the most time consuming part of the process.  To speed things up a bit, I've decided to create a selection of windows and doors, mold them, and then make resin casts.

Here's a few of the first batch I did:

I will be doing a tutorial on how I created the round window and the paneling on the red door.  Stay tuned.

Next up are some Iron Kingdoms themed pieces:

Sorry for the bad image.  I took this with my phone.  I upped the contrast, so you can see the rivets a little better.  I am going to redo these to clean up the upright rivet strips.  The gaps will be filled, so once cast, they will look much cleaner.

More Cryx

I've been madly assembling and painting more figs as I work my way toward a 50pt. list.  Next up:

Warwitch Siren:

Necrotech and Scrap Thrall.  I've had these for a while, as I intended to use them for an Iron Kingdoms RPG scenario.  So, I thought I'd paint them up, but I don't know how much use they'll get.

And finally some Bane Thralls.  First, the leader:

Sorry, the lighting is not good on the grunts.  

I have chosen a slightly different paint scheme, using green/gray cloth and armor with copper accents on the armor.

I'm currently working on the Deathjack.  It's now base-coated and awaiting shading.  I've also added a unit of Satyxis Raiders with the Sea Witch attachment (for some anti-caster shenanigans), another Warwitch Siren, and Gorman di Wulfe.  The last few are primed and ready to base coat.

Still waiting on a Tartarus model from my FLGS, but the Bane Thrall Unit Attachment is primed too.

I'm switching gears a little on the basing, as I'd like to see more texture.  I like the blighted earth look of those already done, but I think I can combine the two for some really improved basing.  Lastly, I picked up some of the tufted grass bits from Army Painter to add to a few of the bases for a little more visual interest.

OK, back to painting.
